7 TIPS TO CARE FOR YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS

Want to know how to take care of your hair extensions? Blending extensions with your natural hair is possible if you know the proper techniques. You can also use several different types of products to blend in your new locks without them sticking out like an obvious wig or toupee. Here are some tips on how to lay roots and conceal your extension plugs for a completely undetectable weave that looks exactly like your own tresses!

#1 Wash Your Hair Regularly & Condition It Often
Washing your hair at least once per week with shampoo and conditioning it often helps soften up your real hair strands so they’ll be much easier to manipulate. If you have straight, limp or thin natural tresses, washing/conditioning can help “plump” them up so they’ll hold a style better and blend in with your locks better.

#2 Use Sectioning Clips to Keep Locks Separate During Application
Using small sectioning clips, like those made by Goody, can make the hair blending process way easier. By separating each section of real hair as you lay down your track (sew-in) hair extensions, you ensure that every strand will remain flat down on your head for a smooth, natural weave without bumps or other abnormalities. This also helps create an instant part and reduces visible edges!

Separating each section allows you to keep track of where each piece was sewn/glued into the weft and keeps everything nice and clean until installation time. It’s much easier to sew down and blend each track into the natural hair if it’s not all mushed together and overlapping.

#3 Use a Low Heat Setting When Curling Your Locks
Using a low heat setting on your curling iron is very important when you want to create super tight curls that are less likely to frizz out over time. Using high heat settings constantly can permanently damage your tresses resulting in tangles, uneven kinks/waves or even loss of hair due to excessive breakage if done too often. If you want tight ringlets, try using perm rods instead! They’ll last longer than even the most stubborn curlers will.

Curling damp locks constantly causes unwanted tension which can lead to shorter hairs breaking off at the root. If you MUST use a curling iron, always curl your hair when it’s dry so that if any damage does occur, it will only affect the outermost ends of your strands and not cause permanent shortening.

#4 Use Shampoo & Conditioner to Soothe Itchy Scalp
Using just baking soda or water to wash your hair can leave it dry, brittle and even more itch-inducing than before. Using shampoos or clarifying washes made especially for colored/damaged tresses is recommended while wearing sewn in (wefted) extensions since they don’t strip away color like their harsher counterparts do.

If you’ve worn extensions for several months, chances are you’ve experienced some irritation due to dryness and constant tension on your roots. Try using a deep conditioning masque at least once per week while you wear weaves to help replenish natural oils and moisturize the skin beneath.

#5 Use Moisturizing Products to Keep Edges Manageable
Edge control/grip aids like Got2b Ultra Glued Edges (or similar) work really well for laying down new root growth. By applying edge control or gel along scalp edges, you prevent frizzing during initial installation and make it easier for sew-in hair extensions to lay flat against your head until they’re sewn in. Using these products ensures that your extensions won’t pop up an inch from the sides or back of your head and can help reduce extensions from popping up at all!
If you’re wearing weaves for several months, chances are that the roots around your edges will begin to grow out since they’re no longer being pulled down by the weight of your natural hair. Using edge control agents helps hold them in place while making it easier to blend real hairs with tracks for an undetectable blend.

#6 Try a Shampoo-Conditioner Duo For Thicker Hair
Thickening shampoos & conditioners make thin, limp locks seem thicker temporarily by coating each strand with moisturizing ingredients like proteins, ceramides, and botanicals. Look for these kinds of products if you have fine locks but want to create the illusion of thicker hair for up to a few hours after lathering.

If you want thicker locks but have thin/fine strands, try to use products that will boost your volume from root to tip. Any frequent shampoos or conditioners can be used as long as they don’t contain sulfates which tend to dry out tresses and reduce elasticity over time. Fine-haired ladies should look for moisturizing ingredients that provide shine and increase the overall body to their locks while making them appear thicker!

#7 Use a Deep Treatment For Harsh Chemicals & Excessive Styling Heat
A deep treatment masque helps replenish lost moisture and treats any damage done by harsh chemicals or excessive heat styling tools. Apply the treatment at least once per month and leave it in for at least 5 minutes before rinsing out or washing with shampoo/conditioner to keep your hair supple and free of frizz. Try products like Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Gel (or similar) if you want a temporary hold that makes hair feel thicker while protecting against moisture loss.

Heat protectants help lock in moisture by creating a barrier between your hair and harsh styling tools like flat irons & curling wands. If you invest in one product to use on your natural or weave locks, make it a heat protector spray since it prevents breakage from excessive heat exposure while keeping strands shiny, bouncy and thick!
