We think that this is a question that has come up in every Wiggin’ Out discussion group we have ever had. Being the moderator of the groups, we thought it was time to get my thoughts together and share them with everyone.
First off let us explain how we approach this issue because there are different reasons for wigging out or getting extensions, so you will find people who disagree with us. But please keep an open mind while reading this article. Also, remember everyone’s wig journey is different so take what you want from this information and leave the rest.
Your hair loss can be due to medical issues such as Alopecia Areata, Ance Scalp Treatments, Chemo Treatments or your hair loss can be due to your own choice.
The medical treatments I have mentioned cause hair loss in an area of the scalp, so you will only need to cover the area that is thinning or bald. You may choose to go with extensions during treatment because it gives you confidence knowing that no one knows your secret if they are looking at your thin spot, but others do not see this as necessary.
Some people lose their hair gradually over time and this type of hair loss cannot be medically treated or prevented except wigs or glues are used for thinning spots on the top. So if you choose to wear wigs then extensions are not necessary. This is where wigging out comes in…
Imagine having thick soft beautiful shoulder-length locks of hair. Wigging out is all about wearing wigs to enhance your natural beauty! There are many things you can do with wigs that you cannot do with your own hair. You have more freedom in what styles you can wear, you can change your color as often as you want without damaging your own hair, and the list goes on.
Wigging out involves buying a wig cap for better fit, learning how to put on a wig so it looks natural, and most importantly having fun doing it!
If one of your reasons for wigging out was because of Alopecia or medical treatments then extensions are not necessary unless they are needed to cover a thinning spot due to medical treatment – but we wouldn’t recommend getting extensions if your hair loss is due to Alopecia or medical treatments. Extensions are not a good idea because for one it will take you much longer to get used to wearing wigs so the process of getting used to them will take more time. And secondly, having extensions can be very dangerous for your scalp. It would be better in the long run if you improve your skills with wig caps and learn how to wear wigs properly before adding extensions into the mix.
Now let’s say that you have lost all of the hair on top of your head but still have thick locks underneath – this is normal healthy hair therefore there should be no reason why you would want to cover it up with a wig cap or extension braids! You can wear a wig, scarf, or hat over this area.
Now let’s say that you have a thin spot on your scalp because of your own choice and not due to medical treatments, again no one should feel the need to cover it up with wigs or extension braids unless they want to! You should be proud of what you have left even though everyone is going through some type of hair loss at this time – just remember there are many people who have lost all their hair due to Alopecia, Chemo Treatments and other types of medical conditions so do not compare yourself to anyone else. These people do not have the options that we as wiggers have, so use our opportunities wisely.
I hope that we were able to address your questions about wigging out and extensions. We would like to mention one more point before we conclude this article:
Going natural with your hair is a good idea if you want to save some money on wigs and extensions, but only if you have enough healthy hair underneath that can be left alone. If your decision was based on the amount of money spent on getting treatments such as Alopecia Treatments then it would be wise not to go natural because these treatments can get very expensive so chances are there will be no extra money for buying new wigs and extensions if you cut off or shave your head completely.
As always, consult a professional stylist before making any decisions over whether to keep wearing wigs and extensions or to go natural.
No, if the front is fitted properly then it should cover your balding area.
We understand that you may not be used to wearing wig caps but once you get the hang of it, you will be able to wear any type of hat without worrying about showing your hair loss area. If there are still days when you do not feel like wearing a wig cap because it does not fit right or it’s too hot outside (I know this can happen in the summertime), please remember to wear hats.
This is impossible to answer simply because it’s such a broad question. The average person will not go bald from wigging out but there are some people who have experienced traction alopecia due to doing things such as – Tight ponytails, tight braids, and getting weaves that were too tight. If you tense your hair on a daily basis then yes, you can go bald or worse experience traction alopecia! So remember to take care of your natural hair underneath your wigs and extensions by giving them proper attention.
Well, you can’t really prevent lice from your wigs once you’ve removed your extensions BUT it’s easy to get rid of those pesky little bugs. Click on this link for helpful information on how to kill lice by using natural home remedies.
